Fuck Off, Christopher Hitchens was inspired by A Very, Very Dirty Word, a short piece by Christopher Hitchens written for Slate, the online 'zine. A Very, Very Dirty Word explained how the phrase "fuck off" evolved through the years. Fuck Off, Christopher Hitchens represents my first attempt at transforming text into imagery, rather than combining text and imagery. I see it as a beginning, in the sense of developing a series of less memory-intensive animations. Illumination Gallery has been online for getting on a year now and if there's one thing I've learned it's that while high-speed Internet connections are fine for uploading and downloading huge media files, they are scarcely ideal for experiencing media online. In time this situation will change. However, right now I must face the reality that if I want to viscerally impact on people, avoiding the delays inherent to densely textured web animations is important. I am not rejecting the previous animations I created for Illumination Gallery, far from it. I am simply saying it'll take time before we are all globally connected in a high-rez fashion. Meanwhile, as an artist I feel I must acknowledge the low-rez reality currently defining the web as an online medium. Simple black and white animations centered entirely around text are a great start. Thus with a high-speed Internet connection Fuck Off, Christopher Hitchens loads and triggers almost immediately. It lasts just over a minute, then loops. Nevertheless, a high-speed Internet connection is definitely required and I recommend using Firefox as your browswer.
